Fuel Report October 2026

Fuel remains one of the highest variable costs for owner-operators. Each month, we track the latest EIA diesel prices, regional spreads, and market forces affecting what you're paying at the pump, then break down what those numbers mean for your next load.

National Diesel Price Updates

Current national diesel price: $6.38/gal, as of Oct 1, 2026

The national average fell nearly 15 cents in the latest EIA report, after increasing over August and September. Prices are sitting much higher year over year.

Regional Breakdown: Where Prices Are Moving

Regional prices moved very differently than national averages. The Rocky Mountain region was the only major region to post an increase, rising 6.7 cents to $6.407/gal.

Since last week…

  • DOWN: Gulf Coast, Midwest, East Coast and West Coast
  • UP: Rocky Mountain
  • BIGGEST MOVE: Gulf Coast, down $0.22/gal

Regional price breakdown shows high prices in the west coast and lowest in the gulf coast. The difference between the lowest- and highest-priced regions is currently $1.40/gallon.

For a truck burning approximately 100 gallons, that's a $140 difference per fill-up, before considering taxes, discounts, or individual truck-stop pricing.

The October Fuel Outlook

Diesel prices enter October with short-term relief but significant uncertainty. The national average has fallen from its recent high, but crude oil remains volatile and diesel is still more than $2.60 above year-ago levels. For carriers, that means fuel should remain a key consideration when calculating load profitability and deciding where and when to fuel.
